Race Day Fervor at the Hudson Valley Triathlon

(July 12, 2023) Any athlete would agree that there is no atmosphere quite like race day. Between the excitement of the racers as they get to the starting line, the bustle of activity at the vendor expo, and the enthusiasm of the spectators as they cheer on the competitors, the Alpha Win Hudson Valley Triathlon was full of fantastic energy earlier this month. Participants of all skill levels had the opportunity to race in the 70.3, Olympic, Sprint, or Open distances, as well as the Diamond Mills 5k run at beautiful Fifth Lake on July 1, 2023.

Alpha Win Hudson Valley featured a beautiful swim in spring-fed Fifth Lake in Rosendale, New York, a breathtaking bike ride over the Rosendale Railroad Trestle, and a flat and fast run on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. The Half distance in particular experienced a bike course with a loop around the Ashokan Reservoir, the oldest and one of the largest New York City reservoirs in the Catskills.

Alpha Win Hudson Valley was joined by athletes across the tri-state area, and as far south as the Carolinas.  With over 20 triathlon clubs and groups in attendance, Alpha Win welcomed back numerous tri-club partners including TriLatino Triathlon Club, GORILLAS, FDNY Triathlon Team, Capital District Triathlon Club, Brooklyn Triathlon Club, and Beacon Endurance.

The triathlon club area overlooked the finish line, and nearly a dozen clubs set up tents and seating areas to cheer on their teams as they finished. TriLatino, FDNY Triathlon, and GORILLAS were among those with huge turnout at the event. “At the heart of our mission is community. The Alpha Win-Hudson Valley Triathlon feels like an extension of our Club. TriLatino’s mission is to open doors for all athletes within the endurance race space and this is what we experience every year that we join you. Everyone is celebrated and leaves with a feeling of accomplishment and joy. We can’t wait to return next year,” said Vice President of TriLatino Donna Somerville. “Fun local race with challenging bike course and beautiful trail run. Nice to see so many tri clubs out on course,” said FDNY Captain David Guilford. “It’s always an amazing day when you compete with Alpha Win!” said Jason Diaz of the GORILLAS. “Its landscape, competitors and race staff folks from all around are one word, beautiful! This is why us GORILLAS have adopted this Kingston event as our Family Team event every year!”

After the race, athletes (21 and over) were treated to a complimentary beer from the Keegan Ales Beer Garden and enjoyed post-race pasta courtesy of BLACKBARN Hudson Valley. Athletes were invited to visit the Speed Hound recovery tent to try out their Pro Recovery System, and the overall male and female winners of each distance were awarded a Pro Percussion Gun courtesy of Speed Hound as well.

The Hudson Valley Marathon – A Picture-Perfect Weekend at the Walkway Over the Hudson

(May 10, 2023)           There’s no other experience quite like running directly over the Hudson River, and athletes had the chance to do just that this past weekend on May 7, 2023 at the Hudson Valley Marathon at the Walkway Over the Hudson, presented by Morgan Stanley. With the glittering water sprawling on either side of them, athletes made their way across the Walkway Over the Hudson towards the scenic and shady Dutchess Rail Trail.

With five distances to choose from, athletes of all ages and skill levels joined together to celebrate the sport of running and enjoy the beauty of the Hudson Valley. After crossing the finish line onto the Hudson Valley Rail Trail, participants received a complimentary beer from the Hudson Ale Works Beer Garden and three selections of post-race pasta courtesy of BLACKBARN Hudson Valley.

With such a flat and fast course, many athletes even walked away from the event with new personal records, including Hilary Topper, who beat her previous 10K time by two minutes. “I absolutely loved the Hudson Valley 10K race,” said Topper, blogger with ATriathletesDiary.com. “We ran on the Walkway Over the Hudson and saw the most amazing views. The trail continued through the Dutchess County Rail Trail which was shaded with several key water spots. This made for a fast race. I even PR’d it! The organization was incredible. The volunteers and staff were so helpful and between the views, the organization and the post-race activities, I was in my happy place.” Topper was joined by several members of her running club, WeREndurance. You can check out her full review of the day on her blog here.

The Alpha Win – Ave Maria Marathon – A Weekend Full of Family Fun

(February 17, 2023)    Family and friends from across Florida gathered this past Saturday to celebrate the sport of endurance racing in the most authentic way possible: by running! Ave Maria locals and visitors alike came together to race a total of five distances in the Ave Maria Marathon on February 11, 2023. The event featured a Friends and Family Mile, 5K, 10K, Half, and Full Marathon, with the courses finishing right in the heart of the Ave Maria community in Annunciation Circle.

Julia Webb was among the athletes who raced with family this weekend. Julia (pictured right with her daughters Joanie and Gabby) currently holds the world record for the stroller half marathon with a time of 1:21:34. She competed in the 5K on Saturday while pushing her third daughter Gabby, finishing with a time of 23:51. Running is throughout the family, as Julia is the wife of the American record holder in the Mile, Alan Webb. Racing alongside her were her other two daughters, Joanie and Paula, who came in at 23:49 and 29:17, respectively. Joanie took first for her age group this weekend, and she was the Donahue Running Club’s top finisher at the middle school Cross Country state meet this past fall.

Joining the lineup of families who competed this weekend were the McLachlins, who competed across multiple distances and all won age group awards. 12-year-old Sophie and her father, Andrew, raced the 5K, and both placed 3rd in their respective age groups. Sophie’s mother, Joanna, completed the Half Marathon with a time of 2:13:02, securing her a 3rd place age group award, while her brother William was the 2nd overall male in the 1 Mile run.

Also among those participating, was one inspiring and incredible athlete in particular: Caryn Lubetsky. Caryn (pictured left with Kerry at another event) is a three-time Guinness world record holder for duo racing, having set the record in 2019 at the New York City Marathon. With a time of 3:54:25, she ran the fastest marathon by a woman pushing another woman in a wheelchair. Together with her rider, Kerry Gruson, they created the non-profit organization ThumbsUp International, with the goal to “Expand attitudes about life’s possibilities by connecting people across all abilities to conquer athletic challenges together.” In Ave Maria this past Saturday, Caryn ran solo, and came in first overall for the women in the Marathon, finishing with a time of 03:52:54.

Overall winners in each distance are listed below. Congratulations to all those who placed overall and in their age group. View the full list of results on Race Results at my.raceresult.com/231657/.

Sarasota Triathlon Kicks Off Season on High Note

Mother-Daughter duo compete for love, life and inclusivity

(January 25, 2023)      “Everything is difficult until it becomes easy,” said Liz Lopez, who swam, biked, and ran in the Alpha Win Sarasota Triathlon with her daughter Summer with a clear mission in mind: to encourage people to drive safely. Liz has always had a passion for running, and in late December 2015 her daughter expressed interest in training with her. However, that New Year’s day, Summer was in a car accident, leaving her unable to run or compete on her own.

While Summer was in the hospital, her mother continued to run as a way to relieve her anxiety and bring only positive energy to her daughter when she visited. Liz feels it had a tremendous impact as Summer’s strength only continued to grow; when Summer was discharged from the hospital, Liz started training with her. They completed their first Sprint triathlon together in August of 2021; one triathlon became two, and soon enough they were completing Olympic events together.

“For the determination,” Liz explained, “you have to find that within yourself to keep going, because you will see the changes in them, and for them, you will want to keep going.” After competing together for two years, Liz has already seen impressive changes in Summer, from being more vocal to showing a deep enthusiasm for the sport. Their next goal? To take on the 70.3, and one day the 140.6, distance. They hope to promote safety and inclusivity in the sport and inspire others in a similar position to take the leap and train for their first triathlon.

Liz’s sentiments on self-determination were certainly apparent to athletes as they crossed the finish line after the 2023 Alpha Win Sarasota Triathlon. Athletes from across the state and country joined together at Nathan Benderson Park on January 8, 2023 for a day full of great racing. The park boasts a 400-acre man-made lake, along with a beautiful trail circling the 600-acre park, making it one of the best triathlon venues in the U.S. With sunny, clear skies and temperatures in the high 60s, it was perfect weather for personal records and plenty of spectators to gather.

The weekend began on Saturday at local bike shop Ryder Bikes, where athletes were invited to pick up their packet and attend an athlete meeting with the race director. Race day led off with the Half distance at 8:00 am, followed by the Sprint and Olympic distances. The event also marked the inauguration of the Sprint Duathlon option for athletes. With a run-bike-run format, the Duathlon is a great option for newbies and experienced athletes alike. Mark Witmer kept his lead throughout the race, coming in first for men at 01:04:35, while Kristin Woodward took first for women at 01:18:42.

Jordan Taylor led off the Sprint Triathlon pack with a finish time of 01:10:35, coming in first overall for the men. Emily Davis took first for women overall in the Sprint category, finishing with a time of 01:21:45. The Olympic distance had impressive overall winners as well, with Emily Machiela coming in first for the women at 02:33:45, and William Thompson taking first for men at 02:06:34. Tanya Zucco finished first with over an hour lead for the women in the Half distance at 04:59:23.
